IPTV Catch-Up TV Explained

Catch-up is the feature people don't know to ask for and then can't live without: programmes that already aired stay playable for a window of time, straight from the programme guide. Missed the match, the soap, the grand prix start? Scroll back and press play.

How it works

Where a channel has catch-up enabled, the service records its output on a rolling window. Your player app shows this through the EPG: past programmes on that channel appear playable rather than greyed out — usually marked with a small icon or a distinct colour in the guide grid.

Selecting a past programme streams the recording on demand, with normal pause and seek. There's nothing to set up in advance and nothing stored on your device — it's the service's recording, streamed like any other on-demand title.

What it's brilliant for

• Sport at awkward hours — overnight cricket, early-morning F1 sessions, late US sport: watch at breakfast instead of setting an alarm.
• The clash problem — two matches at 3pm; watch one live, the other from catch-up after.
• Walking in late — start tonight's film from the beginning at 21:20 instead of joining 20 minutes in.
• No planner administration — nothing to remember to record, no storage to manage.

The practical limits

Honesty section:

• Not every channel has it. Catch-up is per-channel, and availability varies. The guide shows you directly which channels carry it.
• The window is finite — commonly a few days. It's a catch-up feature, not a permanent archive.
• Spoiler discipline is on you. The scoreline exists everywhere else; catch-up can't help with that.

Player support

Catch-up needs the app to understand it, and support varies:

• TiviMate — excellent catch-up integration in the EPG grid; a big part of why enthusiasts rate it.
• IPTV Smarters — supported via its catch-up/TV archive sections.
• IBO Player Pro — supported on catch-up-enabled channels.
• Plain M3U in VLC — no. Catch-up rides on the API connection, another reason to prefer the Xtream login (M3U vs Xtream Codes).

Trying it
